In a world long since stripped of magic, the only thing Ivara has ever wanted for herself is a way out. Growing up in the shadow of her brother’s destructive battle with addiction, Ivara became a shadow child: always overlooked, always overburdened. Becoming a field medic is her path to freedom. Gods willing, her orders will take her far from her apathetic parents and the childhood she’s trying to overcome. She works herself to the bone to complete her university healing courses, but when her obsessive need to achieve her goal backfires and her grades plummet, Ivara resorts to the only obvious option: adding more to her plate. Volunteering as a healer for the university’s up-and-coming soldiers will give her the extra credit she desperately needs. This, however, puts her in proximity to the university’s resident maverick, Ezekiel, a ruthless soldier suffering the same addiction as her brother.

When Ivara needs a test subject for an upcoming project, recruiting Ezekiel becomes the perfect guise to overcome her infuriating curiosity and attraction. But when the man she gets to know is nothing like the man rumor suggests, she’s torn between the instinct to run and the urge to get closer.
